Burglar Bars

Cottage Pane Burglar Bars

10mm round vertical bars on 19mm steel horizontals, every bar epoxied 50mm into the wall. A classic pane pattern that holds far better than it looks.

Cottage pane burglar bars are steel bars set in a pane pattern, with 10mm round vertical bars running between 19mm steel horizontals, so a window keeps the divided, traditional look it was built with. Every bar is set 50mm into the wall on all sides and locked in with epoxy, which makes them considerably harder to get through than ordinary burglar bars.

The epoxy is what sets these apart. Most burglar bars are held by the depth of their fixing alone, so drilling out or levering that fixing frees the bar. Here each bar goes 50mm into the wall and is then chemically locked into the hole, so the bar and the masonry behave as one piece. There is no mechanical fixing to work loose, because there is no mechanical fixing to attack.

Anchoring on all sides counts as much as the depth. The bars go into the wall top, bottom, and both sides, not only at the head and sill. That leaves no free edge to lever against, and no run of bar that can be sprung out of the opening while the rest stays put.

This is the traditional choice on looks. The pane pattern suits cottage-pane and Georgian windows, older houses, and anywhere a plain horizontal run would look wrong against the architecture. The finish is rust-proofed and powder-coated, and can be matched to your property’s colour scheme, so the bars follow the frames instead of fighting them.

Benefits

  • Locked in with epoxy

Every bar is set 50mm into the wall and then locked in with epoxy. There is no mechanical fitting to drill out, because the bar is chemically bonded into the masonry, and that has proven a very strong way to fix a bar.

  • Anchored on all sides

The bars go into the wall top, bottom, and both sides, not just at the head and sill. With no free edge, there is nothing to lever against and no run that can be sprung out while the rest holds.

  • 19mm and 10mm steel

19mm steel horizontal bars carry the frame of the pattern, and 10mm round vertical steel bars fill it. The round verticals are what give cottage pane its period look rather than a caged one.

  • Maintains aesthetics

The pane pattern suits cottage-pane and Georgian windows and older architecture, where a plain horizontal run would read as an afterthought bolted across the glass.

  • Rust-proofed and powder-coated

The bars are rust-proofed beneath a powder-coated finish that adds longevity and can be matched to your property’s colour scheme.

  • Payment terms available

Finance runs over up to 24 months through FeverTree, so a whole house of windows need not be done one at a time.

Frequently asked questions

What makes cottage pane bars stronger than ordinary burglar bars?
Cottage pane bars get their strength from the fixing. Every bar is set 50mm into the wall on all sides and locked in with epoxy, so it is chemically bonded into the masonry rather than held by a mechanical fitting that can be drilled out or levered. That method has proven very strong, and it is what makes these much harder to get through than ordinary burglar bars.
What are cottage pane bars made of?
Cottage pane bars are made from 19mm steel horizontal bars with 10mm round vertical steel bars set between them. Everything is rust-proofed and finished with a powder coating that can be matched to your property’s colour scheme.
Will they suit a modern window?
Cottage pane bars can suit a modern window, though the pane pattern is the traditional choice and is at its best on cottage-pane, Georgian, and older windows. On a plain modern frame, our horizontal bars usually sit better, giving a clean set of lines instead of a divided pattern.
Can I still open the window, or get out in an emergency?
Both fixed and swing-away units are available. Swing-away units suit a window that doubles as an escape route, or one you want to open fully for ventilation. It is worth deciding this room by room at the assessment.
Are they made to fit my windows?
Yes. Cottage pane bars are custom-made to fit any window size and architectural style, and the pane layout is set to the window rather than adapted from a stock panel. We take the measurements at the free on-site assessment.
How do I maintain them?
Cottage pane bars need very little upkeep. Wipe them regularly with a damp cloth to clear dust and debris, and use mild detergent and water for tougher grime. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which damage the powder-coated finish.
How long is the guarantee on cottage pane bars?
Cottage pane burglar bars carry an eighteen-month guarantee.
Can I pay burglar bars off over time?
Yes. You can pay any DEFENDoor® order off over a term of up to 24 months through our finance partner, FeverTree.
