Why DEFENDoor®

Why secure your home or business with DEFENDoor®?

30+ years of manufacturing in South Africa, insurance-approved products, and a written guarantee on every installation.

DEFENDoor® has spent more than 30 years on one thing, manufacturing and installing security that holds. Every product is custom-built to your door or window and fitted by our own installers, insurance approved and guaranteed in writing. The same range and the same standard apply whether you are in Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban.

Security is one of the few things you buy hoping never to test. The most important qualities are the ones you cannot see once the job is finished.

Our gates look good, and we think it shows, but the real strength is under the finish.

Why DEFENDoor®

Seven things true of DEFENDoor®, whichever of our six ranges you end up buying.

  • Over 30 years of specialising

Since 1995 we have spent our time on the business of keeping you safe, and nothing else. Design, fabrication, and installation stay under one roof, for over three decades, as our whole trade rather than a sideline of a building firm or an import warehouse.

  • Insurance approved

DEFENDoor® products are insurance approved. Many policies set conditions on the security fitted to a property, and approved products are the ones that satisfy them.

  • Trusted by reputable businesses

Homes are only part of it. Cell C, Dis-Chem, KFC, Nestlé, Standard Bank, Pepkor, and others have chosen DEFENDoor® to protect their premises, all buyers who compare specifications properly before they sign.

  • Patented, not copied

We hold patents on our own designs, among them the bubble perforation on our roller shutters, which puts light and air through a closed door in a pattern nobody else is allowed to use.

  • A finish that survives the sun

A long-lasting powder-coated finish with UV properties, over rust protection. South African light is hard on a coating, and a finish that chalks and fades in three summers eventually takes the steel with it.

  • The only FASA-approved barrier security company

The Franchise Association of South Africa audits its members against published standards for agreements, disclosure, and conduct. DEFENDoor® is the only barrier security company in the country to hold that approval, which says something about how our business operates.

  • Finance in four easy steps

Payment plans of up to 24 months through FeverTree, so securing a whole house or a full site does not have to happen one opening at a time.

Key features of defendoor gates

A security gate is the clearest place to see the difference, because almost every part of one is a decision somebody could have made more cheaply. These are the decisions we made, and they are worth asking any other supplier to match.

  • Single bar uprights

One continuous bar per upright rather than two bars joined along their length, which removes the leverage point. There is no seam for a crowbar to work into and separate.

  • 19mm x 19mm steel tubing

The uprights on the DX-222, DX-420, and DX-310 are 19mm x 19mm steel tubing, against the 16mm commonly used elsewhere. Three millimetres sounds trivial until something is levered against it.

  • Two hook-locks on every gate

A gate with one locking point gives an intruder one thing to defeat. Our gates take two separate star-key hook locks, so forcing one achieves nothing on its own.

  • Flights locked into the bars

The flights are locked into the bars rather than sitting loose against them, so the lattice behaves as one structure under load instead of as a set of hinged parts.

  • Rotating steel bottom bolts

The bolts that lock into the bottom track rotate, which makes hacksawing them extremely difficult, because a blade cannot bite on something that turns away from it.

  • Star-key locks

Star-key locks replace the ordinary oval cylinder and resist picking and snapping, which is where an ordinary cylinder gives way first and most quietly.

  • Stainless steel rivets

All essential rivets are stainless steel. Joints are what fail first on a gate, and a corroded rivet undoes one years before the steel around it gives way.

  • The U-channel faces the wall

The U-channel protecting the locks faces the wall rather than the street, so the mechanism is hidden from whoever is standing in front of it.

Our locations

Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban all maintain one expert standard, with nationwide availability.

  • Head Office, Gauteng

Where the manufacturing happens, and the base for installations across Johannesburg, Pretoria, and the wider province.

  • Cape Town, Western Cape

Covering the Cape metro and surrounds. Coastal conditions are hard on steel, which is why the rust protection and the powder-coat finish are specified the way they are.

  • Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Serving Durban and the KZN coast, where heat and humidity make the same demands of a finish as the Cape does.

  • More franchises opening

Three bases is where we are today, and not where we intend to stop. We are actively looking for franchise partners to take on new territories, working to the same range and the same standard.

Frequently asked questions

How long has DEFENDoor® been trading?
DEFENDoor® has been trading since 1995, more than 30 years spent entirely on manufacturing and installing security products. Design, fabrication, and installation stay under one roof, so the people who build your installation are the ones who answer for it.
What does "insurance approved" mean?
Insurance approved means the products meet the security conditions insurers set. Many policies set conditions on the security fitted to a property, particularly in higher-risk areas, and approved products are the ones that satisfy those conditions. It is worth confirming the specifics with your own insurer before you buy.
What is FASA approval?
FASA approval comes from the Franchise Association of South Africa, which sets and audits standards for franchise agreements, disclosure, and conduct. DEFENDoor® is the only FASA-approved barrier security company in South Africa.
What is actually different about a DEFENDoor® gate?
A DEFENDoor® gate is set apart mostly by things you cannot see once it is installed. The uprights are single continuous bars rather than two joined together, so there is no seam to lever apart. They are 19mm x 19mm steel tubing rather than the 16mm commonly used. There are two hook-locks rather than one, the bottom bolts rotate so they cannot easily be sawn, and the U-channel protecting the locks faces the wall rather than the street.
Do you install everything yourselves?
Yes. Installation is carried out by our own trained crews, working from measurements we take on site at the free assessment. Alignment and anchoring are what make security hold, and both depend entirely on the installation.
How long is the guarantee?
DEFENDoor® guarantees run between 18 months and 5 years depending on the product. Security gates, louvre shutters, and transparent burglar bars carry 5 years, armoured doors carry 2 years, and roller shutters, mesh screens, and steel burglar bars carry 18 months.
Can I see a sample before I decide?
Yes, and you should. Ask to see a sample before you commit to any purchase, because with so much variety on the market, it is the only way to know what you are paying for. Our consultants bring one to the free security assessment and will answer your security questions at the same time.
Do you cover my area?
DEFENDoor® operates in three main regions: head office in Johannesburg, and franchises in Cape Town and Durban, covering Gauteng, the Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, with teams that travel beyond them. If you are outside those provinces, call the national line on 0860 333 363 and we will tell you honestly what we can reach. We are also actively looking for franchise partners in new territories.
Can I pay off an installation over time?
Yes. You can pay any DEFENDoor® order off over a term of up to 24 months through our finance partner, FeverTree.
