Mesh Screens

Mesh Security Screens

Stainless steel mesh screens that keep the view, the light, and the airflow, while keeping out intruders, insects, and animals.

A mesh security screen is a barrier of high-grade stainless steel mesh set into an aluminium frame, fitted over a door or window so the opening can be left open. It is fine enough to keep insects and animals out and strong enough to be a security barrier, while light, air, and the view all pass through it. That is what lets a screen leave the opening open where a bar, a shutter, or a gate would close it.

The mesh is the product. It is 0.9mm wire diameter black stainless steel in SS316 grade (marine grade) which is why the screens suit coastal and humid sites as readily as inland ones. The mesh is black because a dark mesh is far easier to see through than a bright one.

The mesh sits in aluminium profiles, and the screen locks with a hook system that stops it being lifted off its rails, which is the quickest way past a sliding screen otherwise. Beyond that, you choose the lock: a high-grade slam lock, a dead lock, or a high-security 3-point system.

These are fitted to homes, holiday homes, game lodges, and businesses. The pest barrier is essential at a lodge, where the same screen that stops an intruder stops monkeys and insects.

What makes the screen work

  • Corrosion-resistant materials

SS316 stainless mesh in aluminium profiles. Both resist corrosion, so the screens suit all climates, coastal sites included.

  • Ventilation with visibility

Mesh screens let airflow and natural light pass through, so an opening can stay open. You keep the ventilation and the view, with a security barrier behind them.

  • High-security locking

A choice of high-grade slam locks, dead locks, or a high-security 3-point lock system, matched to the opening and how it is used.

  • Anti-lift technology

A hook locking system holds the screen so it cannot be lifted off its rails, which is otherwise the quickest way past a sliding screen without touching the lock.

  • Fits what you already have

Suitable for windows and doors, sliding or hinged, in three screen types with a range of hardware options.

  • Keeps pests out

The screens also form a barrier against pests such as monkeys and insects, which is why they end up specified at holiday homes and game lodges as often as at houses.

Screen types

Three ways to install the same screen.

  • Hinged

Top or side hinged, for doors and windows. Midrails can be added for extra strength or extra visibility, depending on the span.

  • Sliding

Sliding panels for doors and windows, with an interlocking panel design on a single top and sill track and a centre locking jamb. Carries the anti-lift hook system.

  • Folding

A single door hinged on a frame, covering a door or window opening, with a 3 or 4-sided frame. Runs on a single top and sill track with a centre locking jamb, and carries the anti-lift hook system.

Models and specifications

Hinged, sliding, and folding screens are built to the same specification, stated once here because nothing in this list changes between them.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mesh security screen?
A mesh security screen is a barrier of high-grade stainless steel mesh set into an aluminium frame, fitted over a door or window so the opening can be left open. It works as a security barrier, an insect barrier, and an animal barrier at once, while light, air, and the view pass straight through it.
Can you see through a mesh security screen?
Yes. The mesh is black stainless steel, and a dark mesh is much easier to see through than a bright one, because the eye focuses past it rather than on it. Natural light and airflow pass through, which is what makes a screen an alternative to closing the opening.
What is the mesh made of?
The mesh is 0.9mm wire diameter black stainless steel, in SS316 grade. SS316 is the marine grade, so the screens resist corrosion and suit coastal and humid sites as well as inland ones, in any climate.
Will it keep insects and animals out?
Yes. Mesh security screens are an insect and animal barrier as well as a security one, monkeys included, which is a large part of why they are specified at holiday homes and game lodges as often as at houses.
What locks are available?
You have a choice of three locks: a high-grade slam lock, a dead lock, or a high-security 3-point lock system. A range of hardware accessories is available alongside them, and the right combination depends on the opening and how often it is used.
Can the screen be lifted off its rails?
No. Mesh security screens carry a hook locking system with anti-lift technology, specifically so the screen cannot be lifted off its rails.
How long is the guarantee on a mesh security screen?
Mesh security screens carry an eighteen-month guarantee, across all three screen types.
Can I pay mesh screens off over time?
Yes. You can pay any DEFENDoor® order off over a term of up to 24 months through our finance partner, FeverTree.
