Horizontal burglar bars are steel bars fitted across a window in horizontal lines, embedded into the brickwork rather than screwed to the frame. DEFENDoor® makes them from 19mm steel reinforced with 25 x 12mm side steel supports, custom-made to the window and powder-coated to match the frames they sit against.
The strength is in the fixing as much as in the bar. These are embedded 50mm into the brickwork, so each bar is anchored in the wall itself. A bar screwed to a frame is only as strong as that frame, which can be prised, cut, or removed with the bars still attached. Embedding into brickwork takes the frame out of the equation.
The 25 x 12mm side steel supports are what keep the run rigid. Without proper side supports, horizontal bars flex when they are levered, and that flex is what eventually opens a gap. The supports carry the load across the whole opening and give the finish its neat, squared line.
Horizontal is the plainer of the two steel profiles we make. It features a set of clean lines rather than a pattern, which suits modern frames and commercial premises. Because the powder coating can be colour matched, bars in the same colour as the window frame all but disappear from a distance.

The horizontal bars are 19mm steel throughout, the same gauge as the uprights on our trellis gates, and heavy enough that cutting one is a slow and noisy job.

25 x 12mm side supports
Side steel supports at 25 x 12mm carry the load across the opening and stop the run flexing when it is levered. They also give the installation its neat, squared finish.

Embedded 50mm into brickwork
The bars go into the wall, not into the window frame. 50mm of brickwork holds each bar, so an attack on the frame does not take the bars with it.
